“We’re making sure that every single hour, somewhere in town, there will be activities that people young to old will be interested in,” said Kendra Heistand.

She is one of four people in charge of getting everything ready for Dow City’s sesquicentennial, which takes place this weekend.

Heistand is in charge of advertising and marketing for the event.

The sesquicentennial kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with a flag-raising ceremony.

Saturday begins with a fun run/walk around town at 8:30 a.m., a parade at 11 a.m. and then lots of fun at the park.

“The activities in the park are going to be huge,” Heistand said.

Inflatables, a rock climbing wall, putt-putt golf and chainsaw carving are among the many activities taking place at the park on Saturday.

The Dow City-Arion Fire Department will be making wings. Pizza, snow cones, ice cream, lemonade and beer will be available elsewhere.

“There will food that everyone will like,” she said.

A DJ will play music in the park all day.

At 9 p.m., the event’s headline act, Damon Dotson, will perform.

“He brings a good following with him,” Heistand said. “He’s very entertaining and he interacts well with the crowd.”

Dotson plays covers and original music.

The final preparations are taking place this week with the production of signs concerning parking, the parade route and sponsorships.

“We’re just working on the fine points to make sure everything is the way it needs to be,” she said.

Tents have been reserved in case of excessive heat or rain.

“Rain or shine, we will have events,” Heistand said.

Visitors should plan to stay a while to check out all the activities.

“We’ll have entertainment for every age,” she said. “Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to leave anytime soon.”
