The Denison City Council plans to fill a vacant At-Large council position by appointment at 5 p.m. June 18, according to a resolution they approved last Tuesday.
The resolution was published in the Denison Review on Friday.
The vacancy was created by the resignation of Brittany Okker, who moved from Denison.
City Clerk Lisa Koch said Okker had planned to attend the June 4 meeting but had moved the day before.
This will mark the second time the council appointed someone to fill the seat since the November 2017 election, when Rachel Desy was re-elected to a four-year term.
Desy resigned on March 2, 2018, to spend more time with family and focus on her health and wellness during a pregnancy.
Okker was appointed to the city council about a month later, on April 3.
Voters have the right to file a petition to require that the vacancy be filled by special election. That must be done within 14 days of the date the notice was published (on June 7) or of the appointment, whichever date is later.
No matter how the vacancy is filled, the seat will go up for election this November for the remaining two years of the four-year term.
The city is inviting anyone interested in filling the vacancy to submit a letter or resume to the city clerk. The address for Denison City Hall is 111 North Main Street, Denison, IA 51442. The city clerk’s email address is email@example.com.
