Head-on collision south of Denison on Highway 59

A two-car crash that occurred south of Denison at 5:08 a.m. today claimed the lives of three women.

They are Penny Hulsebus, 52, of Defiance; Maria Petra Garcia Hernandez, 48, of Denison; and Ericka Leticia Dionicio, 42, of Denison.

Injured in the accident were Herme Yaneth Guzman Hernandez, 50, of Denison; and Saul Armando Guzman Orellana, 46, of Denison.

Guzman Hernandez was taken to Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) and then the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) by Lifenet. Guzman Orellana was taken to CCMH and then to UNMC by Midwest Air.

Hulsebus, Garcia Hernandez and Dionicio were taken by Crawford County Ambulance to CCMH in Denison.

The accident happened on Highway 59 south of Denison near the intersection with 270th Street. It is the last curve on Highway 59 heading south to Defiance.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Hulsebus was driving a 1997 Ford Windstar north on Highway 59 and Guzman Orellana was driving a 2008 Nissan Rogue south on Highway 59. Hulsebus’s vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the Guzman Orellana vehicle head on.

Garcia Hernandez and Dionicio were passengers in the rear seat of Guzman Orellana’s vehicle.

The accident is under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol, Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Crawford County Ambulance, Manilla Fire and Rescue, Denison Volunteer Fire Department and the Denison Police Department were all at the scene.

The drivers and passengers were all wearing their seat belts.
