As of Monday, 27 teams have signed up to compete in the KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) competition at this weekend’s Tri City BBQ Fest.
Crawford County Tourism Coordinator Blair Weigum said she expects the final number will be higher than 30.
Nine teams have signed up for the amateur competition.
The deadline for the Smoky Karaoke competition has been extended to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Individuals interested in entering should send a recording of their performance of a song to Evan Blakley, executive director of the Chamber & Development Council (CDC) of Crawford County, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The recording could be an MP3 or wave file, but Blakley said a video recording would be better.

In the Kids’ Zone, water walking balls are back from a new vendor.
A rock-climbing wall, human whack-a-mole, a safe version of axe throwing (not real axes), Leaps and Bounds (ball-jumping obstacle course), a giant slide, pony rides, petting zoo and Gyro Extreme (spinning sphere ride) are the other attractions in the Kids’ Zone.
Wristbands for the Kids’ Zone in advance are $20 until 5 p.m. on Thursday at the CDC office and will cost $25 at the event.
Denison High School cheerleaders will have a dunk tank fundraiser featuring celebrity dunking victims.
About 75 volunteer shifts still need to be covered, said Rachel Desy, CDC office manager.
“The main areas we could use help in are Kids’ Zone, the merchandise tent, the soda station and a few volunteers are needed for the Iowa Craft Beer tent,” Desy said.
Early shifts on Friday are mostly covered, but more volunteers are needed from 7 p.m. to close on both nights and early shifts on Saturday.
The Kids’ Zone needs more volunteers throughout the day on Saturday, she said.
“We need more people so we can let people take breaks if they are sitting out in the hot sun or if it’s a chilly day,” she said.
Extra volunteers are also needed for when others can’t make a shift or have to leave early.
“We also like to be able to send people out into the crowd to sell merchandise because not all the visitors even know there is a merchandise tent,” Desy said.
Individuals who want to show up and volunteer during the festival should go to the merchandise tent to sign up, which is where the sign-in form for all volunteers will be.
Volunteers who sign up by Wednesday will be guaranteed a free t-shirt.
Helicopter rides for groups of three at $30 per person will take off from the old hospital site on 20th Street.
Shuttles at the festival will be available for transport to the takeoff site.
Representatives of Our Iowa Magazine and the Iowa Gallivant, an Iowa travel/food blog, will be on hand at the festival, Weigum said.
“I’m very excited to welcome them to Denison and Crawford County,” she said.
