Nine Denison High School (DHS) students have attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as members of the 2019 All-State Music Festival.
Auditions were Saturday, October 26 in Atlantic. Musicians from throughout southwest Iowa auditioned for coveted spots in the three All-State ensembles.
Selected for the Iowa All-State Band are Anthony Parker (clarinet), James Garcia (clarinet), Evelyn Lopez (bass clarinet), Maggie Chapman (contra clarinet) and Adolfo Vargas, Jr. (tenor saxophone).
Parker, a junior, is the son of Ruth Parker and was selected for the All-State Band for the third year.
Lopez (junior, daughter of Lorena Palmer), Vargas (junior, son of Adolfo Vargas and Sandra Calderon), and Garcia (sophomore, son of Juan and Josefa Garcia) are all second-year members of the Iowa All-State Band.
Chapman, a senior and the daughter of Gayle and the late Scott Chapman, will be participating in her fourth All-State Music Festival and will be recognized at the concert for that achievement.
Manuel Garcia-Paz (junior) was awarded a second-round auditions and was named a first alternate clarinet for the Iowa All-State Band.
Other DHS band students that received second-round auditions are Jack MacGregor (junior, trumpet), Daisy Ortiz (senior, flute) and Joshua Ahrenholtz (senior, euphonium).
All of the band students selected for the All-State Festival are students of DHS band director Ruben Newell.
Selected for the All-State Chorus are Dalton Fredericks (tenor 1), Parker Bekkerus (bass 1), Noah Fredericksen (bass 1) and Jinessa Lewis (soprano 2).
Fredericks (senior), son of Doug and Christi Fredericks, and Bekkerus (junior), son of Patti Bekkerus and Perry Bekkerus) are making their third trip to the Iowa All-State Music Festival.
Lewis (freshman), daughter of Johnny and Janelle Lewis, is a first-year All-State selection.
Fredericksen (senior), son of Dennis and Cathy Fredericksen, will also be recognized at the 2019 All-State Music Festival concert for being a four-year All-State selection.
Three other DHS vocalists were awarded a second-round audition on Saturday: Ali Gorman (sophomore, soprano 2), Wyatt Randeris (freshman, bass 1) and Brooke Brodsky-Kropf (senior, alto 1).
All vocalists are students of Kandy Thompson, DHS vocal music director.
In total, 37 musicians from DHS auditioned for the All-State ensembles on Saturday.
The nine accepted students (along with the alternate, if selected) will be traveling to Ames on Thursday, November 21, to participate in rehearsals for the Iowa All-State concert, which will be performed in Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, November 23.
The concert will be broadcast on Iowa Public Television during the Thanksgiving weekend.
