The recent controversy at city hall could have been and should have been avoided.

The way this was handled by elected officials is one more example of why workers need unions. Every worker should be entitled to due process in disciplinary cases, and you don’t get that when punishment is handed out without a reason being given.

Even though the workers involved were management and would be exempt from union coverage, they still should have been informed of “why” beforehand.

Blue collar workers rarely if ever get suspended with pay so proper procedures are all the more important. A courtesy call to a local union office or to a human resource officer would have provided good free advice to the mayor.

I hope the elected officials learn from this and apologize to the three employees as well as the citizens of Denison. They likely owe attorney fees to the three employees also.
