Two men were injured in a crash late Monday night west of Manilla that caused one of the vehicles to catch fire after it rolled.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Jonathan Miguel Casteneda Mendoza, 37, of Denison, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado north on Highway 59 between X Avenue and W Avenue, near mile marker 93, and Juan Manuel Ortiz, 63, of Chaska, Minnesota, was driving a 2005 Freightliner south in the same location.
For unknown reasons, Mendoza’s vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane in front of the Freightliner. The vehicles struck in an off-set, head-on collision.
The rear of Mendoza’s Silverado rotated to the east and the pickup came to rest facing west in the northbound lane, partially on the east shoulder.
Ortiz’s Freightliner entered the west ditch and rolled onto the driver’s side. It caught fire and burned.
Mendoza was transported to Crawford County Memorial Hospital by Crawford County Ambulance.
Ortiz was flown by Med Air 1 to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
The Iowa State Patrol report says that both men were using their seat belts.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and Manilla Fire & Rescue.
The accident happened at 11:55 p.m.
