Rocket Notes: Ar-We-Va won the Rolling Valley Conference regular season championship a year ago sporting a 7-1 league record with its only loss to CAM. The Rockets avenged the loss to CAM with a 3-1 regional semifinal victory over the Cougars, which propelled Amber Hoffman’s club into a regional final matchup with Gladbrook-Reinbeck, which picked up a 3-1 victory and a berth in the state tournament. Ar-We-Va lost three girls to graduation, including all-stater Emilee Danner, who led the Rockets in kills (442), digs (218) and total blocks (115). Emily Hinners also graduated after being second to Danner in kills (113) and among the team leaders in total blocks (23). Head coach Sarah Smith (1997) and assistant coach Leiting (1996) both graduated from Ar-We-Va. Leiting played on Ar-We-Va’s state-qualifying volleyball team in 1994 and also served as the school’s assistant volleyball coach from 2012-14.
Comments from Smith: We return a good nucleus of girls from last year’s team that have quite a bit of varsity experience. That nucleus will have to step up and be team leaders and fill different roles they may not be accustomed to. We will also need some of the younger underclassmen to quickly mature and take on roles at the varsity level. Those younger girls really seem to mesh well with the upperclassmen so the team chemistry is there. It will be a matter of time to develop those girls through game experience.
As for the Rolling Valley Conference, I feel quite a few teams lost some of their top volleyball players. It will be interesting to see how the conference shakes out this year.
