Boyer Valley will enter the 2019 softball season under the guidance of first-year head coach Paige Gaskill.

Gaskill is a 2018 graduate of IKM-Manning High School and had an outstanding softball career for the Wolves.

She will be joined on the field by first-year assistant coach Madison Hast, a recent graduate of Boyer Valley.

Gaskill inherits a team that lost five players to graduation from last year’s club that went 7-7 in the Rolling Valley Conference and 8-13 overall under then head coach Jim Ewoldt.

The Lady Bulldogs will be young with no seniors among their 15-member roster that includes three juniors, three sophomores, five freshmen and four eighth graders.

Among the graduation losses were both of the team’s top two pitchers in Grace Reineke and Lindsey Anderson.

Reineke tossed 110 of the team’s 122 innings a year ago.

"We are in need for finding a new pitcher, catcher, second baseman and shortstop. That being said, nobody at this time has a position because we will be trying everything to see who will fit best where," commented Gaskill.

"With this being my first season coaching ever, I’m hoping to have the team improve in areas that they were not very strong in last season," she added.

BV does return five starters from a year ago.

They are juniors Taylor Klein, Marie Hanigan and Nicole Behrendt; sophomore Kylie Petersen; and freshman Leah Cooper, who more than likely will take over the pitching duties for the Lady Bulldogs.

Behrendt is the team’s top offensive player back after hitting .311 with four doubles, one triple, while driving in six runs and scoring 17 runs.

Sophomore Alexia Miller is another returning letterwinner for BV.

Filling out BV’s roster are sophomore Zoe Reffitt; freshmen Paige Ringenberg, Jaci Peterson, Lizzy Shimerdla and Makenzie Dumbaugh; and eighth-graders Talia Burkhart, Kaylie Beam, Mary Shimerdla and Rian Snavely.

"Every player on this team has potential to be a great player. With the right teaching and enough determination, this team has the potential to improve dramatically from last season," noted Gaskill, whose club will open its season on Monday, May 20, against West Harrison at Mondamin.
