Lady Bulldog Notes: After winning five of eight matches in the Rolling Valley Conference a year ago, the BV girls will enter the 2019 season as one of the favorites to capture the league title under veteran head coach Larry Neilsen, who also coaches the school’s girls’ basketball team. The Lady Bulldogs return five of their top seven hitters from a year ago, including Fokken, who had a breakout season a year ago and was among the conference leaders with 276 kills, while also leading the team with 48 overall blocks. Katelyn Neilsen also had a terrific 2018 fall season, hitting 92 percent of her serves and connecting for 58 aces to go along with 165 digs. She will be looked upon to add more offensive productivity from the front row this season for her coach and father. Miller returns as the team’s top setter with 473 assists and adds stability to the team’s offense.

Comments from Neilsen: We have a strong group returning with a lot of varsity experience, especially in some key positions. Fokken had a great season a year ago and we’ll need another strong year from her for this group to be in contention in the RVC. Our defense should be a strength for us and we’ll need to capitalize on this. Serving will need to be an asset to keep opponents on the defensive. Our hitters will have to make good decisions and be more consistent than last year, while we will also have to find at least one more consistent hitter to produce points. Of all the aspects of the game, we have the most improvement to make in the serve receiving area. We’ll need to be sharp in this area so we can attack first and stay aggressive.
