1A athletes at state track 2019

Athletes in the coverage area of the Denison Bulletin and Review brought home a total of seven, top-eight medals in the Class 1A portion of state track and field meet that took place Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium at Des Moines.

The Ar-We-Va boys had two individual medal winners, as Drew Schurke placed fifth in the long jump on Thursday with a best jump of 21 feet, 3 1/2 inches, while Keegan Simons was the state runnerup in the high jump on Friday with an effort of 6 feet, 5 inches.

Ar-We-Va’s Leslie Luft finished seventh in the long jump on Thursday with a feat of 16-2 1/2.

The Ar-We-Va boys tallied 12 points as a team and finished 23rd overall in the final 1A standings.

Luft’s long jump effort garnered the Ar-We-Va girls two points, good for a four-way tie for 55th in 1A.

Boyer Valley’s Justin Ambrose placed seventh overall in the 3,200-meter run, as that finish garnered the Bulldogs two team points for a four-way tie for 54th overall.

The IKM-Manning boys medaled in three events.

The Wolves’ 4x800 relay team of Nathan Blankman, Adam Gruhn, Alex Lingle and Parker Behrens wound up placing second overall in a new school-record time of 8:13.39.

Grant Stracke also took fourth in the discus event on Friday with a personal-best toss of 149-4.

And, IKM-Manning’s 4x400 relay team of Stephen Grimm, Gruhn, Behrens and Lingle finished eighth overall in the finals on Saturday in 3:32.68.

That foursome had qualified for the finals after running seventh in the prelims on Friday in a season-best time of 3:29.28.

The IKM-Manning boys tallied 14 points as a team to finish in a four-way tie for 17th in 1A.
