Carroll High spoiled Travis Wessel’s debut as Denison-Schleswig’s head baseball coach on Wednesday night, as the Tigers earned an 8-7 nonconference victory over the Monarchs at Carroll.
D-S lost despite outhitting Carroll by a 10-7 margin.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning
when D-S plated three runs. Carroll came back with two in the last of the fourth to make it 3-2.
The Tigers then pushed five runs across in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead that stayed that way until the Monarchs scored four times in the seventh.
The game ended with D-S stranding the tying run at second base and go-ahead run at first base.
Four D-S batters had two hits apiece.
Braiden Heiden went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored.
Dawson Dorhout also was 2-for-3. Carter Wessel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Jack Mendlik finished 2-for-4 as well.
Sean Moran went 1-for-4 with four runs batted in and one run, while Jaden Petersen finished 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Nathan Gallup and Evan Turin each scored one run for the Monarchs, which used two pitchers in the setback.
Dorhout started on the mound and took the loss in four innings of work, as he gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Petersen also threw two innings, yielding one run on one hit with three Ks and two walks.
The D-S junior varsity boys knocked off Carroll, 8-3.
Hunter Emery threw three innings for the win with Caden Fletcher tossing a scoreless inning in relief.
Logan Dahm, Trey Brotherton and Fletcher all had two hits in the win. Logan Dahm, Carlos Salazar, Parker Bekkerus and Harrison Dahm all had one hit for the Monarchs, which opened with a four-run first inning for an early lead.
