The Denison-Schleswig boys’ tennis team lost a 5-4 decision to Spirit Lake-Okoboji in Class 1A Substate action on Monday at Carroll.
SL-O won four of six singles matches, while D-S captured two of the three doubles matches.
Singles winners for D-S were Colin Reis at number two and Harrison Dahm at No. 4.
Reis defeated SL-O’s Nate Cornwall 6-0, 6-2 to complete a perfect singles season at 11-0.
Dahm moved his singles record to 14-4 after a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over SL-O’s Parker Zeman.
Down 4-2 after singles play, the Monarchs had to sweep SL-O to win the match.
The top two D-S teams of Sean Moran and Reis and Chris Krajicek and Caleb Seuntjens had no problems winning their matches.
Moran and Reis beat Drew Hickerson and Cornwall, 6-1, 6-1, while Krajicek and Seuntjens earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zeman and Drew Ditzworth.
Moran and Reis improved to 12-3 in doubles, while Krajicek and Seuntjens finished 13-2 as a team.
Dahm and Austin Freese played in the No. 3 doubles spot for D-S and the tandem won set one, 6-4, but then SL-O’s Newman and Cade Wagner rallied to win sets two (6-4) and three (6-4) for the match win.
"Spirit Lake-Okoboji had a very similar team to us. We were solid from top to bottom and unfortunately things just didn’t fall our way," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Aaron Ratliff.
"Tournament time is always an abrupt way to end the season, but this was a very good team finishing the season with a 10-1 record," he added.
The season isn’t over, though, for senior Moran and freshman Reis, as they will be playing in the Class 1A state doubles tournament today (Friday) and Saturday at Waterloo.
Besides Moran, the team’s other two seniors this year were Seuntjens and Freese.
"Seuntjens developed a monster backhand that significantly improved his game. He jumped up from number five last year to a much more difficult number three spot and enjoyed his best season," Ratliff said.
Seuntjens finished with a 9-2 singles record.
"Freese developed the net skills to back up his well-timed forays at the net. At one point in his junior season, I doubted his doubles ability, but he made me a believer in him this season," Ratliff remarked.
Freese finished 12-5 in singles play and had a 9-1 record in doubles competition.
