Jack Mendlik, Dylan Gehlsen and Evan Turin combined on a five-hitter on Friday night, as Denison-Schleswig posted a 9-4 nonconference baseball victory over Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove at Ida Grove.
The win was the first of the season in three games for D-S and handed Travis Wessel his first victory as a head coach.
The Monarchs scored two runs in each of the first, third, fourth and sixth innings to produce an 8-0 lead.
O-A/BC-IG came back with four runs in the last of the sixth to make it 8-4. The Monarchs then pushed another run across in the seventh for the win.
D-S had seven hits on the night.
Braiden Heiden went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs batted in and two runs scored to lead D-S.
Nathan Gallup went 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs. Jaden Petersen was 1-for-3 with one run.
Dawson Dorhout finished 1-for-4 with one RBI. Evan Turin also was 1-for-4. Carlos Salazar wound up 1-for-1 with one RBI for the Monarchs, which will return to action tonight (Tuesday) at Harlan in Hawkeye 10 action.
Mendlik opened on the hill for D-S and picked up the win in going five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on just two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Dylan Gehlsen relieved Mendlik and gave up three runs on two hits with one walk.
Turin then came in and tossed one and two-thirds, yielding no runs on one hit with two walks.
"Offensively, we came through at the plate when we needed to with some hits at key times. I guess you can say we had a few timely hits," commented Wessel.
"You know, Mendlik threw well. He was in command of his fastball and that was his primary pitch on the night. He had a few off-speed pitches, but for the most part, his fastball was on," he added.
"It was a quality win over an athletic team," Wessel said. It was good to see the guys get that first victory and get that monkey off their backs."
"At the same time, it felt good to get that first win as a head coach, but it’s more about the kids, so I was happy to see them pick up the win and be able to enjoy a victory," Wessel remarked.
