D-S girls claim Storm Lake Tournament title

The Denison-Schleswig girls combined for 27 hits in two games to capture the Storm Lake Softball Tournament championship on Saturday.

D-S pounded Pocahontas Area in game one by a 17-1 margin in four innings. The Monarchs then picked up an 11-3 victory over Storm Lake in the tournament’s title matchup.

The two wins improved D-S to 8-1 overall on the year.

vs. Pocahontas Area

D-S scored all of its runs against Pocahontas Area in three innings, as the Monarchs plated three in the first, six in the second and eight more in the fourth.

Pocahontas scored its lone run in the second.

The Monarchs scored their 17 runs on 12 hits, as 11 different girls hit safely for Kevin Dau’s club.

Paige Armijo went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Alex Mohr went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs. Sarah Heilesen was 1-for-2 with a double and one run. Kailey Pick was 1-for-1 with a double, one RBI and one run.

Kambrie Dau also went 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run. Allana Arkfeld was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Ashlynn Carlson went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Payton Goslar finished 1-for-3. Kira Langenfeld was 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run.

Teryn Fink was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and one run, while Hannah Slater wound up 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run for the Monarchs.

Hailey Meseck earned the pitching victory for D-S, as she tossed all four innings, allowing just the one run on three hits with four strikeouts to her credit.

vs. Storm Lake

The D-S girls continued to swing hot bats in the championship game, as the Monarchs collected 15 hits in their eight-run victory over the host Tornadoes.

D-S scored at least two runs in four of the seven innings.

Kayla Rauch led the hitting attack for D-S by going 3-for-3 with three singles.

Mohr went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run.

Heilesen was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs in the contest. Pick was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Dau finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

Tatum Fink was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Goslar went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Paige Kastner went 1-for-1, as was Anna Meyer.

Heilesen threw all seven innings for the win, as she allowed three runs on just one hit with nine Ks and six walks.

Heilesen tossed 125 pitches in the win.
