D-S girls place fourth at O-A/BC-IG Tournament

D-S girls at Battle Creek

Kevin Dau’s Denison-Schleswig softball team finished 1-2 in games for fourth place at the Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Battle Creek.

On Friday, D-S picked up a 13-3 victory in six innings over O-A/BC-IG.

In one semifinal game on Saturday afternoon, D-S lost 14-0 in six innings to Ballard, Huxley.

D-S then took on Newell-Fonda in the tournament’s third-place game and the Class 1A fourth-ranked Mustangs earned a 12-2 win in five innings over the Class 4A No. 6 Monarchs.

In winning one of three games, D-S moved to 10-3 overall on the season.

vs. O-A/BC-IG

The D-S girls opened the tournament on Friday with a 14-hit attack against the host Falcons.

Leading 8-3 after five innings, the Monarchs plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game by the 10-run rule.

Sarah Heilesen went 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs batted in and two runs scored for D-S.

Paige Armijo was 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and three runs. Kayla Rauch went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

Tatum Fink also was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win. Kambrie Dau finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Kailey Pick was 1-for-3.

Freshman Hailey Meseck threw 54 pitches over six innings for the win, as she gave up three runs on six hits and walked one.

D-S took advantage of six Falcon errors.

vs. Ballard, Huxley

The D-S girls managed only three hits in being shut out by Ballard, Huxley in their semfinal game on Saturday afternoon.

Ballard led 8-0 when the Bombers plated six runs in the top of the sixth to make it 14-0.

Armijo went 1-for-3 for D-S. Fink and Anna Meyer each finished 1-for-2 at the plate with Meyer stealing a base.

Heilesen suffered the pitching loss, as she gave up the 14 runs on three hits with three Ks and 15 walks.

vs. Newell-Fonda

The D-S girls concluded the tournament with a 10-run loss in five innings to a very good 1A school in Newell-Fonda.

Down 3-0, D-S plated both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning to make it 3-2.

The Mustangs then scored one run in the second, adding three in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

D-S collected eight hits in the loss.

Armijo went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Pick also was 2-for-2.

Alex Mohr went 1-for-2 with one run and two stolen bases. Raegan Andersen was 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

Rauch and Paige Kastner each went 1-for-2 as well.

Meseck threw in the circle for D-S and took the loss in four and two-thirds innings of work.

She allowed 12 runs (11 earned) on 15 hits and walked three.
