A shorthanded Denison-Schleswig girls’ track and field team netted 44 points to take home sixth out of eight schools at the Tiger-Knight Relays on Thursday at Carroll.

Dallas Center-Grimes captured the team title with 147 points. Atlantic was second with 125 points, while Creston finished third with 112 points.

The Monarchs competed without four senior leaders in Sarah Heilesen, Alex Mohr, Raegan Andersen and Vanessa Gunderson, leaving head coach Adam Mich to scramble in putting together a competitive lineup for the meet.

"It wasn’t easy with those four girls gone, but we did see some good things from those who did compete," commented Mich.

"I thought Jaime Ibarra performed well in the anchoring the shuttle hurdle relay and placing second in the 100 hurdles," he added.

"Sophie Sonnichsen also ran well in the 100 and 200. She didn’t place in either, but continued to better her times in each event."

"It was a little cold and windy at the start, but we were still able to set five personal records on the night. I thought the girls competed well both mentally and physically," Mich remarked.

Ibarra placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.49 seconds.

Hannah Neemann also took second in the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.

The Monarchs finished third in the shuttle hurdle, 4x800 and distance medley relays.

The shuttle hurdle foursome of Cierra Kastner, Neemann, Kira Langenfeld and Ibarra ran 1:13.99.

The 4x800 team of Ana Lara, Juliana Barajas, Kennedy Marten and Tania Cruz ran 12:21.00, while the distance medley unit of Cierra Kastner, Bella Araujo, Paige Andersen and Morgan Goslar turned in a time of 4:48.56.
