D-S girls vs. SL

The Denison-Schleswig girls posted a 29-point second quarter on Thursday night, as the Monarchs had little trouble in a 68-34 nonconference victory over Storm Lake at Denison.

Playing at home for the first time this season, D-S improved to 2-0 overall in picking up its 11th consecutive triumph against an overmatched Storm Lake squad that was pressured into 23 turnovers on the night.

Leading 15-4 after one quarter, D-S outscored Storm Lake 29-10 in the second to take a 44-14 lead at halftime.

The lead grew to 35-plus midway through the third, as the majority of the second half was played with a continuous clock.

Paige Andersen led D-S with 19 points, adding eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. She scored 17 of her 19 in the first half.

Hannah Neemann tallied 14 points, 12 in the first half, while grabbing a team-high 10 boards in the win.

Sophie Sonnichsen netted seven points. Kira Langenfeld chipped in with six points.

Payton Goslar and Paige Kastner each had five points as well for the Monarchs, which hit 6-of-13 three-point shots and 30-of-57 attempts overall from the field for 53 percent.

Storm Lake, meanwhile, was 3-of-10 from behind the three-point arc and 13-of-36 overall from the floor for 36 percent on the night.

The Monarchs were 2-of-5 at the free throw line, while the Tornadoes hit 5-of-8 foul shots.

"We seemed to struggle early on making shots, but the girls kept battling and shots started to fall," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Adam Mich.

"Our press was effective. That was our goal to get a lead and have the ability to rest our starters and give some other girls valuable playing time," he added.

"We were able to get a lot of easy points off the press and that allowed us to get contributions from a lot of girls tonight," noted Mich, whose team also dominated Storm Lake on the glass by a 32-17 margin.
