Dawson Dorhout tossed six-plus solid innings and Denison-Schleswig batters collected 14 hits in a 9-4 Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball victory on Tuesday night at Atlantic.
It was the second consecutive win for D-S and second this season over Atlantic, as the Monarchs improved to 5-2 in the H-10 and 7-4 overall.
Up 2-1 after two innings, D-S put four runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third to make it 6-1. Atlantic, though, came right back with two in its half of the third to pull to within 6-3.
The Trojans made it 6-4 with a run in the fifth, but that would be it for the hosts, as the Monarchs plated a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the win.
Dorhout turned in another outstanding effort on the mound, as he gave up the four runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
All nine batters in the D-S lineup connected for hits in the win.
Dylan Gehlsen led the way by going 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and one run scored.
Austin Freese went 2-for-2. Braiden Heiden was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs. Dorhout was 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI.
Jack Mendlik finished 1-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run.
Nathan Gallup went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Sean Moran was 1-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Jaden Petersen went 1-for-3 with one run and Carter Wessel wound up 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
"A good game for the guys. Dorhout did a great job on the mound and really kept the Atlantic hitters off-balance by mixing up his pitches," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Travis Wessel.
"Offensively, I thought we were aggressive at the plate. We did a nice job of stringing hits together and moving runners along," he added.
"Defensively, we were pretty good behind Dorhout. I think Atlantic’s eight hits were spaced out."
"It was a good win for the guys," noted Wessel, whose team defeated Atlantic 10-0 in their first meeting back on May 31 at Denison.
The D-S junior varsity boys beat Atlantic 2-1 in a game that was shortened because of rain.
Jaxon Wessel had two hits and one RBI for the Monarchs. Hunter Emery and Austin Scheuring each scored runs for the winners.
Jaxson Hildebrand also had a hit.
