Denison-Schleswig tallied 83 points to place fifth out of eight schools at the Class 3A girls’ state-qualifying track and field meet on Friday at Sergeant Bluff.

Spencer claimed the championship with 154.5 points. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley was second to the Tigers with 108.5 points.

A total of eight girls in five events have qualified for the state meet scheduled for Thursday through Friday at Drake Stadium at Des Moines.

D-S had two automatic qualifiers for the state meet with first-place finishes on Friday night.

Vanessa Gunderson won the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of one minute, 07.11 seconds.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Alex Mohr, Hannah Neemann, Jaime Ibarra and Gunderson took first place in 1:07.92.

Gunderson also qualified in the 100-meter hurdles with a third-place finish in 16.32, which tied a personal record.

The Monarchs also qualified their sprint medley and distance medley relays with fourth-place efforts.

The sprint medley team of Mohr, Paige Andersen, Cierra Kastner and Raegan Andersen ran 1:52.92, while the distance medley foursome of Bella Araujo, Cierra Kastner, Paige Andersen and Raegan Andersen circled the track in 4:28.21.

All three state-qualifying relay teams ran their best times of the year on Friday night.

Mohr, Gunderson and Raegan Andersen all will competing at the state meet for the fourth time in their careers.

Senior Sarah Heilesen just missed qualifying in both the shot put and discus events, as she placed third in the shot (35-6 1/4) and discus (112-6).

"I feel bad for Heilesen, as she was second in the discus after her final throw. Then another girl just beat Heilesen on her final attempt," Mich said.

"We had 10 personal records on the night, so that was nice. The girls competed very well," he added.

"You know, all three of our relays that qualified ran their best times of the year. Gunderson had her best in the 400 hurdles and tied her best in the 100 hurdles."

"I thought Mohr’s time of 13.52 in the 100 might be close, but just missed out despite placing fifth overall. Cierra Kastner just blew away her 200 split in the sprint medley and Raegan Andersen ran her best 800 split in the same event," Mich remarked.

Raegan Andersen added a fourth-place effort in the 1,500-meter run in 5:21.04. She was fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:30.90.

Morgan Goslar ran fourth in the 3,000-meter run in a 12:17.84 clocking.

And, the 4x800 relay team of Ana Lara, Juliana Barajas, Kira Langenfeld and Evelyn Lopez ran fifth in 11:23.48.
