The Denison-Schleswig varsity boys’ soccer team improved to 2-0 in Hawkeye 10 Conference play on Monday night with a 3-0 shutout of Harlan at Denison.
In posting its fourth shutout of the season, D-S moved to 5-2 overall in matches on the season with the win.
D-S led 1-0 at halftime after Gerarado Zaragoza scored his first goal of the season with 27:51 left before the break on a shot from two yards out.
Wyatt Auen and Cesar Rodriguez both were credited with asssists.
The Monarchs added two goals in the second half, the first on Rene Bernal’s second score of the season on a shot from 40 yards out with 35:23 left.
The second goal was netted by Elijah Rangel with 27:32 left on a shot from eight yards out after a one-on-one situation with Harlan’s goalkeeper.
The goal for Rangel was his second of the year.
D-S outshot Harlan, 18-11. Both teams had nine shots on goal.
Efren Magana had five saves in goal for D-S, while Juan Lopez finished with four saves.
"It was a great conference win. Harlan beat us last year and really dominated possession against us, so it was nice to avenge a loss from last year," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Carlos Trevino.
"This win also puts us in the driver’s seat for our goal of winning the conference title. Tonight, we completely dominated possession and played very well with our short passing game," he added.
The D-S junior varsity boys defeated Harlan, 4-1, as the Monarchs moved to 6-0-1 overall in matches.
Jack Vazquez scored two second-half goals to lead D-S.
He raised his season total to four goals.
Ronaldo Ordonez and Manuel Leanos each scored goals in the first half for the Monarchs, which outshot the Cyclones, 16-5, including 10-5 in shots on goal.
Yahir Zavala and Joel Guzman each had two saves in goal for the winners.
"We played very well tonight. We were in complete control for 80 percent of the match and we dominated possession," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Chris Eller.
