The Denison-Schleswig boys concluded their soccer regular season on Monday night with a 3-1 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory over Glenwood at Denison.
The win was the third in a row and fifth in six matches for D-S, which finished 6-1 in the H-10, good for a three-way tie for the championship with Harlan and Lewis Central, while moving to 11-4 overall in matches on the year.
Monday’s match was scoreless until Jack Vazquez of D-S netted his second goal of the season with 12:08 left in the first half on a shot from 16 yards out.
The goal was assisted by Wyatt Auen, who stole the ball from a Glenwood defender on the right wing and centered a pass to Vazquez for the shot.
Glenwood tied the match at 1-1 with 30:15 left in the second half on a breakaway goal after a D-S shot on goal.
Bryan Ortiz put D-S up for good at 2-1, netting his first goal of the year with 24:02 left to play on a penalty kick, resulting from a handball in the box on a Glenwood defender after Cesar Rodriguez attempted a shot on goal.
For good measure, Rodriguez then tallied his 10th goal of the year with 14:56 left to make it 3-1.
His shot was from four yards out after dribbling around Glenwood’s goalkeeper, who came out of the box to challenge the Monarch standout.
D-S outshot Glenwood, 23-18, including 11-9 in shots on goal.
Efren Magana played in goal and had seven saves on the night. Israel Zamago also had a non-keeper save for the Monarchs.
"Congratulations to the guys for a getting a win on senior night and to win a share of the Hawkeye 10 Conference title," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Carlos Trevino.
"Winning the conference title was one of our goals this season and we reached that goal. We got all of the seniors into the game and we got good minutes from all of them," he added.
"Now we are on to our next goal in the postseason and we will start with another Hawkeye 10 team , as we’ll play either Glenwood or Harlan."
"It will be a tough substate with five good teams, so we’ll need to be ready to play," Trevino said.
D-S will open postseason play on Wednesday, May 22, hosting either Glenwood or Harlan in a substate semifinal game at Denison at 6:30 p.m.
Glenwood and Harlan first meet in a quarterfinal match on Monday night at Council Bluffs at 5 p.m.
The D-S junior varsity boys wrapped up their season with a 1-0 victory over Glenwood.
The Monarchs finished 7-0 against H-10 teams and 15-1-1 overall in matches.
Manny Alcaraz scored the only goal of the match with 6:41 left in the first half.
It was his sixth goal of the year.
D-S outshot Glenwood, 17-10, including 8-6 in shots on goal.
"This was the last game in another great season by the Monarch junior varsity boys. We won our last six games by shutouts, as we got great defense and goalkeeping all season," commented D-S coach Chris Eller.
