The Denison-Schleswig varsity volleyball team opened its season on Saturday with a second-place finish at AHST/Walnut Tournament at Avoca.
McKenzie Mich’s D-S went 4-1 overall in matches and 8-3 in games, as the Monarchs advanced to the tournament’s title match.
D-S went 3-0 in pool play with victories over AHST/Walnut (21-12, 12-21, 15-11), Essex (21-12, 21-18) and CAM (21-17, 21-10).
The Monarchs then took on Atlantic in tournament play and picked up a 21-18, 21-9 triumph to move into the championship match against Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.
T.J. claimed the title with a 21-17, 21-19 victory over D-S, which will host Harlan tonight (Tuesday) in Hawkeye 10 Conference action at Denison.
"I was really proud of the girls and their effort today. Playing five matches on your first day out is quite a bit and we thought the girls adjusted well," commented Mich.
"Our serve receive and defense played well today against some scrappy teams. We had kill and block contributions from all of our hitters."
"We played some tough competition and each team had different strengths. It was good to see our girls adjust on defense and at the net," Mich noted.
Hannah Neeman led all D-S hitters with 36 kills on the day.
Allana Arkfeld followed with 26 kills in the five matches.
Kennedy Marten paced the Monarchs with 81 assists in the setting department.
Payton Goslar led the team in digs with 50, while Ellie Magnuson and Sophie Sonnichsen contributed 39 and 38 digs for the Monarchs on Saturday.
