The Denison-Schleswig girls swung hot bats and Sarah Heilesen tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout, as the Monarchs posted a 10-0 victory over Spencer in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal softball game on Thursday night at Denison.
The win avenged a 2-0 loss to Spencer at the Tigers’ Invitational back on June 21 and moved Kevin Dau’s D-S club to 24-13 overall on the year.
The loss ended Spencer’s summer campaign at 13-13 overall.
Alex Mohr led off her team’s initial at bat in the first inning with a triple to right field and scored on a little blooper just over Spencer’s pitcher by Raegan Andersen to make it 1-0.
Heilesen put D-S up 2-0 with a solo home run to deep left center in the third. It was her team-leading seventh homer of the season.
The Monarchs gave themselves some breathing room in the fourth, netting four runs to make it 6-0.
D-S then pushed two runs across in the fifth to make it 8-0. In the sixth, a two-run single by Payton Goslar accounted for runs 9 and 10, as the Monarchs sent everyone home because of the 10-run rule.
Mohr went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, one run batted in and two runs scored to lead the attack for D-S.
Kayla Rauch also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Heilesen was 2-for-3 with her home run shot and two runs scored.
Kailey Pick finished 2-for-3 with two runs.
Andersen went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and one run. Paige Armijo went 1-for-4 and Goslar wound up 1-for-3 with her game-ending two-run single in the sixth.
Heilesen threw six innings for D-S in picking up the win to move to 19-12 overall. She allowed no runs on three hits, struck out 12 Tiger batters and walked only two in an 108-pitch performance.
