Monarchs defeat Creston on soccer field at home

The Denison-Schleswig boys picked up their third victory in four matches on Thursday night with a 4-1 soccer triumph over Creston at Denison.

The win moved D-S to 4-1 in Hawkeye 10 Conference play and 9-4 overall on the season.

Cesar Rodriguez netted two goals to lead D-S, which enjoyed a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Rodriguez upped his season total to nine goals, as he found the back of the net in each half for the hosts.

Elijah Rangel opened the scoring for D-S with his 10th goal of the year just 1:07 into the match.

With D-S leading 2-0, Osvaldo Reyes-Cabrera scored his first goal of the season with 22:28 left in the first half to make it 3-0 at the break.

Creston scored its lone goal with 31:30 left in the second half on a free kick.

The Monarchs outshot the Panthers 20-11, including 13-6 in shots on goal.

Juan Lopez played in goal and had three saves on the night. Efren Magana added one save in goal, while Jeffery Menendez had a non-keeper goal for the winners.

"It was another good conference win. We got everybody into the match for a lot of minutes," commented Denison-Schleswig coach Carlos Trevino.

"Defensively, we had a couple of breakdowns in each half, but we had a non-keeper save to prevent a goal and we got a great diving save from Lopez on a penalty kick," he added.

JV results

D-S won the junior varsity match, 3-0, as the Monarchs improved to 11-1-1 overall on the year.

Manuel Leanos, Ramon Perez and Edgar Lara all scored goals for D-S, which led 1-0 at halftime.

The Monarchs outshot the Panthers, 19-0, including 12-0 in shots on goal.

Yahir Zavala and Joel Guzman each played in goal and neither faced any shots.
