Monarchs vs. Lynx at CB

Chad Van Kley’s Denison-Schleswig football team outscored Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 35-7 in the second half on Friday night, as the Monarchs bounced back from a season-opening loss a week ago with a big 56-28 non-district victory over the Lynx at Council Bluffs.

The win moved D-S to 1-1 overall on the season going into this Friday’s non-district matchup with Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson at the same Gale Wickersham Stadium at Council Bluffs.

The two teams combined for 885 offensive yards, as D-S netted 480 and A.L. 405.

The Monarchs rushed for a total of 392 yards, while A.L. featured more of a balanced attack with 232 yards rushing and 173 yards through the air.

The game was tied 21-21 at halftime, but D-S then outscored A.L 14-0 in the third quarter to take a 35-21 lead into the fourth.

The Monarchs then scored 21 of the 28 points over the final 12 minutes, as Van Kley’s squad bettered the Lynx for the second year in a row after a 42-6 whipping a year ago at Denison.

D-S rushed for six TDs on Friday night with five different guys finding the end zone.

Terrance Weah led all D-S rushers, carrying the ball 15 times for 220 yards with two TD runs of 28 and 19 yards, respectively.

Quarterback Charlie Wiebers ran the ball 10 times for 61 yards with a one-yard TD run. He also was 5-of-12 for 88 yards in the passing department with two TD throws of 24 yards to Weah and 13 yards to Elijah Rangel.

D-S also got rushing touchdowns of one yard from Wyatt Kaub, two yards from Colin Reis and 25 yards from Carter Wessel.

Kaub rushed 12 times for 58 yards. Reis ran the ball nine times for 34 yards and Wessel had the one rush for his 25-yard score.

Nyamlell Wakoson had one pass reception for 35 yards.

Defensively for D-S, Evan Turin led in tackles with six solos. Eddy Gutierrez added five solos and two assists. Emigdio Gutierrez also had three solos, while Austin Korner had two solos and two assists to go along with a fumble recovery.
