The Denison-Schleswig boys split their two games at the Waterloo Bucks Invitational Baseball Tournament on Friday at Waterloo.

In game one, D-S had little trouble with Starmont, as the Monarchs posted a 10-0 victory in five innings over the Stars.

In game two, Don Lyons’ D-S club enjoyed a 10-5 lead over Algona after four innings, before the Bears pushed six runs across in the bottom of the seventh for an 11-10 triumph over the Monarchs.

The split left D-S at 7-6 overall on the season.

vs. Starmont

A five-run second inning fueled the D-S boys in their opener against Starmont on Friday.

Leading 7-0 after the second, the Monarchs then plated two runs in the third and another in the fifth.

Jaden Langenfeld went 3-for-3 with one run batted in to lead the D-S hitters.

Dawson Dorhout went 2-for-3 with a double.

Nathan Gallup was 2-for-2 with one RBI in the win. Sean Moran went 1-for-2 with and RBI single in the first.

Jade Magnuson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Ben Pardun also went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Jacob Irwin had one RBI for the Monarchs.

Dorhout threw four innings for the win, as he gave up no earned runs on just one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

Gallup tossed one inning in relief, yielding no earned runs on one hit.

vs. Algona

In game two on Friday, both offenses produced early on.

After D-S scored a run in its first at bat, Algona came right back with five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-1 lead.

The Monarchs then plated six runs in the top of the second for a 7-5 lead. A three-run fourth put D-S up 10-5.

That ended the scoring until Algona’s six-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

The Bulldogs actually won the game on a walk-off single, as the Monarchs committed five errors that led to four unearned runs.

D-S tallied only four hits in the loss.

Drew Polzin went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Jack Mendlik was 1-for-3 as well.

Magnuson went 1-for-4 with a two-run double in the secon. Pardun also was 1-for-4 with one RBI for the Monarchs.

Dorhout opened on the hill for D-S. He went three and two-thirds, allowing five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Gallup then went two and one-third, yielding one earned run on no hits with one K.

Polzin (1-3) would take the loss in just one-third of an inning, as he gave up one earned run on four hits with one K to his credit.
