Charter Oak-Ute suffered a 77-49 loss to Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton in a Class 1A, District 15 quarterfinal game on Thursday night at Elk Horn.
CO-U, which lost to the Spartans for the second time in six days and third time this season, saw its season end at 9-13 overall under head coach Trent Lally.
Exira/EH-K, on the other hand, improved to 17-5 overall and will now take on Coon Rapids-Bayard in a district semifinal game tonight (Tuesday) at Elk Horn.
CO-U got off a great start on Thursday night, racing out to an 8-2 lead and taking a 15-12 advantage into the second quarter.
Exira/EH-K, though, midway through the second went on a 14-0 run and outscored the Bobcats 21-10 in the period to take a 33-25 lead at halftime.
The Spartans then broke the game open in the third, outscoring CO-U 20-12 for a 53-37 lead going into the fourth.
Exira/EH-K’s Drew Buckholdt led all scorers in the game with 27 points. Cole Burmeister added 15 points for the Spartans.
Spencer Gress paced CO-U’s attack with 14 points. Hunter Clausen added 11 points, five boards and three assists.
Caleb Clemon also had 10 points, five boards, five assists and three steals.
Jesse Hupp contributed eight points and three boards, while Luke Staley had six points, four boards and four assists for the Bobcats.
"We started the game off hot, but we completely lost focus when they put on the press in the middle of the second quarter," commented Lally.
"I was very proud of the guys for digging down and going on a 6-0 run right before halftime to pull to within eight," he added.
"Our boys played great in the second half, but they were just too much for us. We used every ounce of energy we had and left it all on the court, as just ran out of gas," Lally remarked.
Thursday’s game also was the final high school basketball game for CO-U, as the school is entering into a whole-grade sharing agreement at the high school level with Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto at the start of the 2017-18 school year.
Seniors for CO-U this past season were Gress, Hupp, Clausen and Clemon.
